Yoga Mats

A mat is a mat, right? Wrong. With the world of yoga, there are many different types of yoga mats to choose from ... follow this guide to find the one that is right for you.

Most people opt for the “sticky” mat when it comes to yoga. These yoga mats are thin with a bit of padding, and then tend to stick to the floor just a bit better than most other types. However, some people find that different mats really help their posture and pose, which is the most important thing of all when it comes to yoga. Here are some of the names and types that you will come across on your search to find the perfect yoga platform.

“Meditation Mats” come with pillows that will help you to sit perfectly upright. This mat will help your body to become one with your pose, and many people enjoy this extra support. Contrastingly, the “Universal Style” mat is simple, basic, and you’ll find that your hands sink into this mat when you are going through each pose. Lastly, the “Deluxe” mat contains a lot of different textures, which are made from foam surfaces that allow a person to really hang on to every pose.

So, which of the yoga mats mentioned above are right for you? Well, it really depends upon the sort of yoga, and type of postures, that you intend to work through. Not sure? Ask your instructor about the sort of mat that you should purchase. There is no point in buying a meditation mat if you are only going to do simple poses, so find out what you will really need a mat to do for you. Though there are many different products out there, only choose the one that you really feel will suit your needs the best.

When you walk into a yoga store, you may be slightly overwhelmed with choices. Whatever you do, do not show up to your first class with an armful of props, clothes, and mats. Instead, attend your first session with a simple mat in hand, and go from there. Yoga is not meant to be complicated, though retail stores would like you to think otherwise. Simply choose the mat that is best for you, and continue from there (you can always upgrade later on).

Yoga mats don’t have to be overly confusing. Simply stick with the recommendation that your instructor give you, and select the one that you can see yourself using. Remember, yoga is above your body and soul, so give you mind a rest.
